We are a French-Japanese family living on Ishigaki Island with our three children. We run a small one-hectare tropical farm where we grow seasonal vegetables, herbs and tropical fruits, and keep a few chickens.
Our goal is to grow good food while improving the soil, increasing biodiversity and developing sustainable farming methods adapted to Ishigaki's subtropical climate. We use mostly organic and permaculture-inspired methods, but we are practical rather than dogmatic.
Depending on the season, WWOOFers may help with sowing, planting, harvesting, mulching, composting, weeding, orchard and chicken care, tool maintenance and small DIY projects. We are also involved in beach clean-ups and environmental activities around the island.
The farm is beautiful but remote, and tropical farming can be hot, muddy and physically demanding. We welcome people who genuinely enjoy nature, are curious, responsible and able to work independently once things have been explained. Farming experience is welcome but motivation and common sense are more important.
WWOOFers stay in a simple renovated farmhouse. We provide food and ingredients, and cooking is mostly shared between the WWOOFers themselves. We love food and are always happy to cook together sometimes and discover each other's food cultures.
We hope WWOOFing here will be an opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from each other and discover a different side of life on Ishigaki.

Commitment, trust and respect are extremely important to us. This is not a playground or simply a cheap way to stay on a tropical island. This is where we live, raise our family and are part of a small Japanese community. Life here comes with both explicit rules and unspoken social expectations, and we expect people staying with us to respect them. If you make a commitment, we expect you to keep it, communicate openly if something is wrong, and treat the people, the place and the community with respect. In return, you can expect exactly the same from us. Trust comes first.
