Hello! We are a family of three - our names are Hajime, Hinako and we have a baby called Yu. Originally from Tokyo, Hajime moved to Chikuhoku Village in 2020 to build a self-sufficient life. To us, self sufficient means living a life that is sustainable and community-oriented. It means reducing waste, growing my own vegetables and rice, creating wood fired heating systems, building thatched roofs, home-construction and co-living with nature in a way that is natural, circular and co-dependent. Our aim is to sustain myself, my family and my community cohabiting with nature and the changing seasons. We are exploring a satoyama lifestyle, in the village, with a strong sense of community amidst the mountains. We are seeking out questions of happiness, the idea of richness in satoyama, and are constantly learning, changing and developing. We are so grateful to our neighbours, community and nature for the gifts they give us and the gifts we give back. We would love to share this way of living with you.

In our day-to-day life, we work outside most of the day. We each do different chores every day, including working on the rice fields, gardening, taking care of our baby, taking care of the goat, chopping wood and making fire. We are also working on projects, such as building thatched rooves and renovating our homes. We cook every meal, and in the evening, we take a traditional Japanese bath called `goemon buro` outside in nature. A part of our daily routine is spending time together, having deep and meaningful conversations and learning from each other.

Currently, our home has a kitchen, a shared space and two bedrooms. We have also built three traditional Japanese thatched roofs, including a tea room, a jomon hut with a bonfire, and a goemon bath. The woofers stay in the guestroom - a newly renovated room with comfortable futon beds. Upstairs, we have one shared Japanese toilet. We are also in the process of building a big guesthouse, renovating an old, beautiful building for our guests.

We are looking for woofers who are open-minded and curious to learn about rural life, nature, the environment and Japanese culture. We are very flexible with the kind of help that woofers can provide based on their strengths and interests. For example, if you enjoy cooking, we are happy for you to make meals, if you enjoy art we are happy for you to make clothes. We want to work together as a team and build community together. This means that the work is free-flowing, flexible and spontaneous. We become like a family in the time you stay here.

Our biggest priority is our son. He is the centre of our family life, and the reason behind many of the choices we make. We hope our volunteers can accomodate this, and enjoy spending time with us all as a family.

We appreciate support from woofers in daily chores, such as farming and working in the rice fields, cooking, dish washing, cleaning, chopping wood, looking after the baby, milking the goat, diy construction and building projects, and making a fire for the bath. As mentioned above, this depends on the strengths, needs and interests of the volunteers. We are very flexible with what you can support us with, and we love to learn and try new things too!

We cook three meals a day at home. We normally eat rice and many organic, locally grown vegetables, beans, chicken, deer meat, eggs and miso soup. We are very flexible with what we eat and we love to try new things. We are open to vegetarian and vegan diets, and try to eat more vegetarian food ourselves too.

We are fluent and comfortable speaking in English. Hinako grew up in the US for some time!
We are very excited to meet people from around the world and to learn from each other. For us, having woofers is a form of travel. We meet so many different people from different sides of the world, with different perspectives, and different ideas. It enables us to grow and develop as a family, and to build joy and happiness, which is the fundamental aim of our life. We are constantly learning - farming, agriculture, and building thatched roofs is still very new for us. We are happy to share our way of life with you, and are really looking forward to meeting you and learning about how we can be more sustainable!
