Welcome to Igei Farm! We are an organic vegetable farm located in Oogimi. Oogimi is a village in northern Okinawa known locally as the “village of longevity.” It is considered as one of the five “blue zones” in the world, where people are thought to live the longest, happiest lives. In fact, our farm was recently featured in a documentary about longevity by Yes Theory, titled “Why Locals Live +100 Years on this Japanese Island” (SEE VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm-ZhXVGnPg).

Igei-san worked in the cities of Okinawa until about 30 years ago, when he purchased an empty lot in the mountains of Ogimi to realize his dreams of starting an organic farm. It’s his life passion to grow vegetables without pesticides using the traditional techniques he learned from his father. Organic farming requires lots of hands, and this is where we need your help! We have been hosting WWOOFers for over 10 years. While we do not speak any English, we do our best to communicate using translation apps. We do ask that you have an interest in learning Japanese and are respectful of our culture. Please message us in Japanese, and note that as we are older, we may be slow with responding to messages.

Our daily work varies depending on the season but may involve harvesting, weeding, planting, and DIY projects. We work about six hours a day with generous breaks. We provide delicious, traditional Okinawan meals using vegetables and meat from our farm. It’s important to note that our accommodation is a rustic farmhouse, so please be aware of this before applying. We seek people who value connection and understand that you don’t need much to live a healthy and fulfilling life. We have wifi and air conditioning in the summer. You will be living alongside all kinds of insects, so we highly recommend you are comfortable with bugs and bring bug spray. Additionally, you will need work clothes (long sleeves and long pants), a hat, and rain jacket. We have some work boots, but sizes are limited, so please bring your own if you can.

Ideally, we would like WWOOFers to stay for at least two weeks. We look forward to hearing from you!
